When I try to download Freesolitaire, I get a message saying that the download is corrupt. I tried it several times and always got the same result. I have Windows XP.

This just means that something went wrong with the download. Delete the file and try downloading again.

The file VBRUN300.DLL can be downloaded from <http://www.goodsol.com/pgs16.html>. It is needed only for our old 16 bit Windows 3.1 games. If you have Windows 95 or higher, you should download the Windows 95 version of our games.

What do you mean by "stuck"? What game and version is this?

Most likely, you need to reinstall the game. If this is Pretty Good Solitaire, it can be downloaded from <http://www.goodsol.com/download.html>.

It disappeared from my All Games list ! Are there other games which drop out in new versions? maybe games that nobody sends to the website, but are played - or not played?

I play many different games, I've lost my statistics about 2-3 times, so my statistic at the moment has maximum 20-30 games of my really prefered favorites. Of course there's nothing to submit to the website. Except by writing my remarks about games, nobody knows if and which games I play, but I would be very disappointed if one disappears.

Of course I would not notice if one disappears from the Not Played list, though I'm making it shorter.

I'm always looking for memory games on the net, not with cards, but I haven't discovered any good ones except Kyodai.

No, it's still there. It's name has been changed to "Pelmanism", which I discovered in the books is the original name of the game.

Yesterday, I uninstalled Wordperfect 2002 which was a trial version and taking up a lot of space on my hard drive. After rebooting, I turned my computer off.

Today I click on the GoodSol icon on my desktep and I get a Microsoft 2000 installer. I go through several alert boxes, pressing Cancel on all of them and finally I come to the GoodSol game.

Do you have any idea what could have happened? Do I need to reinstall the game?

Thanks for your help.

Patty,
Probably the uninstall deleted some necessary support DLL.

You should be able to get it back just by reinstalling the game from the original setup installation file.

Okay, I've been going round and round with this one. I have the original setup installation file (the CD) and installed 2K again but that didn't help. I restored my computer back to where it was 2 weeks ago and I thought that solved the problem but now when I click on PGS500 I'm getting a Windows Installer and my computer is trying to install Wordperfect 2002. Has anyone else had this problem? I can eventually get to the game but I have to Cancel a bunch of alert boxes before it finally comes up.

I did try uninstalling the game and then reinstalling but that didn't help either.

Any help would be appreciated.

While it's a long shot, and wouldn't seem to be suggested by the problems you're having, have you checked recently to see if maybe you're got a virus/worm/whatever on the loose?

Whenever you get any kind of Windows installer or Office 2000 installer or anything like that, it means that one of the necessary support DLLs must be missing for some reason (deleted, or wasn't installed).

The solution is just to reinstall, making sure that you install with the full installation setup file from <http://www.goodsol.com/download.html> (rather than an upgrade install from a previous version, which won't contain all the necessary files).

Kevin, That's the exact errors that I'm getting. I've had PGS for many years and didn't start having the problem until I uninstalled Wordperfect 2002 from my computer. I've restored my computer and I now have Wordperfect 2002 back but PGS is still acting up.

Thomas, I did reinstall from the 2K CD which I have. I didn't use the upgrade. Nothing happened when I installed.

It's weird because now the alert boxes only appear when I choose a Quest. Previously, they would pop up when I clicked on the PGS icon on my desktop.??

Mike, I don't think it's a virus. Have you heard of a virus that acts like this one?

I guess I can still play the game. I deleted all my statistics, though - bummer.

Hi, Patty,

No - as I'd said earlier, the problems didn't seem to indicate a virus, or at least any I've heard of (and I get several newsletters).

It's just that when you're having mysterious problems, you try to rule out as many things as possible so hopefully you'll eventually find the real "culprit".

Best, and good luck,
Mike

Frank,
First, install the game using the setup installation file.

Then if you still have access to the old computer or a backup, you can copy the data folder from the old computer to the new one.

In version 7.2 and earlier, the data folder is the Games folder under the main program folder (for the Quest Edition, this would usually be C:\Program Files\goodsol01\Games).

In version 8.0 and higher, the data folder location depends on the version of Windows. In Windows 98/ME, it is usually the C:\Windows\Application Data\Goodsol\Pretty Good Solitaire folder. In Windows NT/2000 and XP, it is usually the C:\Documents and Settings\[Windows User Name]\Application Data\Goodsol\Pretty Good Solitaire folder, where [Windows User Name] is your user name for Windows.

We have the installation disc with registration code, but after we installed the program, we get the following message when we try to open a game: "There is a problem running the game. There could be insufficient Windows resources to run it. Try closing other programs or rebooting. If that does not work, the pgscard.dat may be corrupted and you need to reinstall."
We have closed all other programs while trying to open a game, we've rebooted, we've uninstalled and reinstalled, and don't know what to try next. Mother is now experiencing solitaire-withdrawal!

You seem to have a shortage of Windows resources. Normally that is caused by too many programs running, or some program has abnormally terminated and hasn't cleaned up after itself.

This problem is normally solved just by rebooting. You might also try closing other running programs, as something must be hogging all the resources. This may include programs running in the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen.

I encounter the same problems discussed by Patty Smith and Kevin Marino : goodsol launches the Windows installer (Win 2000 SR 1). Full reinstallation doesn't change this. Support claims the problem is a missing dll. Is it possible to trace which one is missing ?

If you get that Windows installer message, that usually means that you are trying to play the game under a different Windows user login than it was installed under. Reinstalling under this other Windows user should solve this.

Windows 2000/XP requires that the game be installed under each Windows user that uses it.

You cannot download solitaire games because WebTV is not a personal computer. :-)

However, you can play some games online (i.e., without downloading). Although I do not know for sure whether it will work, I suggest you try the Pretty Good Solitaire online games at http://www.goodsol.com/online/

Please let us know if these work for you.

Since you've announced major changes in PGS-10 over and above the new games, do you recommend un-installing the old version first? Or are they compatible enough that PGS-10 can simply be "over-installed" the same as with previous versions?

Thanks and keep up the great work,
Mike

It actually won't make any difference, you can simply install version 10 over your old version and it will overwrite it. Still, it is cleanest to go ahead and uninstall the old version first then install the new version. Your data files will not be affected by this (since uninstalls don't delete data files).

I assume that you are talking about Pretty Good MahJongg.

Yes, PGMJ 1.92 was a beta version and should be uninstalled before installing the release version. Uninstalling older versions is generally a good practice with any updated software.

After my last Windows upgrade, my Freecell and Solitaire games freeze up my computer when I click on them. Pinball and Spider Solitaire are fine. I've done an uninstall and reinstall on "Games", but it makes no difference. I've been seeing rumors on various sites that this is a problem for several people. Any advice on how to fix this so I can access those games again?

I've just downloaded the new PGS 10.2, and will install after I get offline.

Back in the old days, clicking on the download link from within the game would steer you to a "mini-download" where you could get just what was necessary to upgrade, rather than a full install.

Since for the last several upgrades this procedure has simply taken you to the full-install page, have you dropped the idea of "patches"? Any thoughts about reviving that procedure?

Thanks and best,
Mike

The update installs just caused too many support problems. People would download them instead of the whole game and then expect it to work. Or, people would save just the update install and not the regular install, then we they got a new computer the install wouldn't work. It just caused too many support questions. It's simply easier to just have the one install file that takes care of everything.

Yes, new versions install over old versions, if you install it in the same folder as the old version.

The install allows you to choose the folder in which to install the game. That determines whether the old version is overwritten or not.

Hi katalinn,

No, score histories are saved just fine, along with nearly all preference/options settings. The only "change" in the scores is that now the displayed percentages include two decimals.

Hi Audrey,
I have the sound turned off completely.
It doesn't bother me that I don't get music every time I win a game because I've heard it hundreds of times before.
To switch it off, go to Options, followed by Preferences, then untick the box that says "Play Sound".
You were complaining that your PC was freezing a lot. Playing music during downloading and saving would probably account for that.

Hi Maria,
The first thing you need to know is what version of PGS you are running because new card sets can not be downloaded for old versions.
On your desktop you should have the PGS logo. RIGHT click on it, and then LEFT click on "properties" at the foot of the little menu that appears. You should now have a new window. Now click on the button that says "find target", and it will open a folder in your PC. Most likely it will be called "Goodsol". There will be lots of stuff in there, but you should see two coloured ones that look identical. Choose the one that says Goodsol and RIGHT click on it. On the menu that appears you left click on "properties". A new window appears. Hit the tab at the top that says "version". (The other one says "general"). Now, just beneath the tab you should see "version" with a number beside it. Mine is 11.0.0.0. Write it down somewhere. Click on OK to close that window.
Now you should be back in the Goodsol folder where you were a minute ago. If you look round in there you will see a few card sets already installed. Don't mess with any of it. This is where we are going to put any new ones you want.
Now, whilst you are at it, you'd be as well finding out exactly where your PGS lives.
Look up to near the top middle of your screen and you will see a button called "folders". Left click on it. Your screen should split into two, and the folder you are currently in should be highlighted in the left and the sub solders also visible.
In my PC it's called Goodsol, and if I scroll up I find that it is part of another folder called "program files". This in turn is in my local disc C. Take note of these locations.
In my case it would look like this; Local disc C/Program files/Goodsol.
Now close the Goodsol folder at the top right of your screen. Also close any of the grey ones that may still be open.
Hopefully you will now be back to your desktop.
There may be better ways of doing this but this is what I find to be the easiest. I can also talk you thru it, so we'll stick to what works for me. I want you to be able to locate your PGS folder any time you want. First I go to My Documents and its folder opens. Top middle of your screen click on the "folders" button. You get the split screen again, (with My Docs highlighted and its sub folders visible). There ia a little minus sign just to the left of the open folder. Click it and My Docs will collapse. Above this you should see My Computer with a plus sign at the left of it. Click on the plus sign. You should now get Local Disc C which you also click. Look down and click the plus sign beside "program files". Then do the same when you see Goodsol. Click on that word and you will see all the PGS files again. Exercise over. Close at top right of your screen. I need you to be able to do this because it's the best way to find out if you've installed your new cards sets properly.
See if you can do this OK and then get back to me here in the forum. If you've posted your email address I will contact you direct. Otherwise phase 2 will follow here.
It may look daunting, but it aint! Trust me.
Richard.

Audrey,
It's not possible to change the volume on just one sound, but you can change the volume in the Sound applet in the Windows Control Panel and that will of course change the volume for that sound.

Hi Richard--sorry it took me so long to get back to you--I was down with the flu and it really hit hard.

My e-mail address is brucam@citlink.net. I appreciate any help I can get--I don't understand why I can't download the card sets----

Thomas, One of us has screwed up re a new registration code. Judging by my track record it's more likely to be me.
My old code was, so I went online and paid for an upgrade, thinking that I'd get a code emailed back. This hasn't happened yet.
I can still use PGS but in the trial version which means that I can't select game numbers to try and solve other people's posers.

Richard, what is puzzling to me is that the upgrades or new game additions are not free anymore--that is too bad---

Richard,

Due to the new version and newsletter, we are overwhelmed with upgrade orders this weekend. We are working as fast as we can to get the upgrade codes out, you'll get your code as soon as possible.
