I've been absolutely addicted to the game Josephine for a couple of years now. It is so satisfying for some reason, and just the right amount of challenge for me. I would love to hear the favorite games of others - a couple were mentioned in the General topic already. Mary |

Mary and Martin, many thanks for recommending new games. The only problem I have with PGS is that there are so many games and I don't know which to try. Also I am very lazy about learning new rules. Empress of India is my current favourite, with Beetle a close second. Morag |

This is really helpful to me also. I don't know where to begin on trying to find a new favorite, and whether to keep trying on one that doesn't strike me right away. So I'm looking forward to trying your favorites! Mary

I am registered, but I guess I do not have a password. Hello, I have had different favorites, and some I play without remembering the name. I am copying all favorites mentioned here, just to take a look at them. Right now my favorite is Incompatibility. I don't even know how I started playing it. I probably chose it by mistake. I like a game I can win if I play right, and if I don't win the first time I can restart it and play the same game again. Lester |

As mentioned in general discussion I am addicted to Empress of Italy and play many games every day, I also like Thumb & Pouch (because I always win!), Great Wheel, and the Terrace group too. Someone posted Thieves of Egypt and I had a few games last night and think this is also going to become a favourite too. |

Lester, >I am registered, but I guess I do not have a password. You can create a username and password by clicking on Register in the upper right corner of this page. This will create a username for this forum. Note that this has nothing to do with your registration codes for any of our games, it's just a username for the forum. There has been some confusion about this, so I have written a message called "How To Post" in the announcements area that hopefully will answer most peoples questions about this.

Susanna, If you like Freecell and Towers, you may like some other favorites of mine: Penguin, Repair, Antares, and Penta. The first three, like Freecell, lets you see all cards, so you can base your strategy on what you see. |

>The first three, like Freecell, lets you see all cards, so you can base your strategy on what you see. This type of game where you can see all of the cards is called an "open" game. There's an entire group of open games in Pretty Good Solitaire you can see by clicking on "Open Games" in the left side of the main screen. These games tend to be the most strategic of solitaire games because you can see all the cards and plan moves out. A good way to learn new open games is to go to the Open Games group and then click on the random game button, which will give you a random open game to play.

Probably an oversight, although technically, it's not an open game because it has a redeal. (La Belle Lucie and Three Shuffles and a Draw are in the open group and have redeals, but they technically should not be there).

Hi. Just registered after the free trial period. I'm addicted to FreeCell. I like being able to start again if don't complete it the first time. Many late nights (or rather early mornings) playing. My friends think I'm sad! Tried Memory today as thought I needed some help with mine. Now back to FreeCell. I appear to have done something wrong as appearing in preview as unregistered - nevermind |

Speaking of great streaks: I had never played Josephine before, but seeing Frank's post made me curious. I am happy to report that I have now played Josephine 15 times, and my results are very consistent. The percentage right now is 0 (zip!), but it will improve, since that is the only way to go...if I do continue to play 'J'.

I started with adding all the games to my favorites. Then I play a random game a few times and if I don't like it I delete it. Problem is: I bought PGP when there were only about 200 games and they keep adding to it. I play forty thieves and josephine at my lunch break because they are easy to stop. At home my favorite is spider. Sometimes I play the same game for a week until I win it. |

I like all "mostly skill"-games. In the last weeks I played tournaments; it is more challenging, because of the restrictions of using the "undo"-button. I also tried some gamdes, which where mentioned here before. I do NOT like games, which one cannot win: I tried empress of Italy about 100 times in the last 3 weeks but I have NEVER won. But I cannot stop... And I do NOT like all-luck-games. |

I've watched my young nieces playing spider on my PC and logging these perfect game scores...and I still have not won the first game yet!!! It's interesting how some of the harder games can come easily and then I can not get over the very first hurdle in Spider!!!! Maybe we should start a separate forum for game coaching??? |

Hi Lyn - I am a fanatic when it comes to playing Spider - I must have perfect 100% scores and in order to do so I will continue to undo, restart until I do so - have played and won about 700 games so far. I always start at number 1 game and just keep going until I win it- it can take me days sometimes.Other games I am a reasonable person and will accept losing now and then (a lot for forty thieves for instance). Try playing Mahjongg Spider - I find it an easier game. Good Luck Magi |

I was like 0-10 on this game, and accidently erased my results when i was distracted. sonce then i've went 1-2 and have played again, loosing, and am 1-3 for 25%. Question > so for example, say I play Empress of Italy ten times, and those scores are uploaded, then on my computer start my stats over, next tiem I upload the Empress of Italy totals will be lowered? (assuming no one else plays that game) and following that the Total Games played tally is lowered too? so hypothetically if all members restarted their stats and tehn uploaded clean stats teh total games played would be near zero? just wondering : ) I'm playing Beetle right now : ) |

The total games played numbers can go down if a higher number of games played score gets replaced with a lower one.

My favorite game is Forty Thieves. At times, I think I've been almost addicted to it! If anyone has any tips on winning, I'd like to hear them. I have tried different approaches but have rarely been able to get beyond a 3 percent winning statistic (out of over 2,500 games). I have also played and played and played the same game until I could win. I still couldn't figure out the "formula" for winning, however. |

Frank, Don't give up on Repair - it is a wonderful game. Sometimes, unfortunately, you get a deal where you can't do anything at all, and you just have to go to a new game. Key to playing successfully is to keep some of the four reserves (in the four corners) open. Then you can look for combinations which are possible if you temporarily move a card or two to those spots. This is probably the game where I use 'undo' more than any other game. In most cases, I dont start all over from scratch, but just undo a few moves and try a different combination. Since you build in alternating colors, you should make sure that you maintain a relatively balanced mix of black and red. In other words, even if you have an opportunity to build one suit far ahead of the others in the foundations, you should be careful not to overdo it; you may need some of those cards as 'building blocks'. By the same token, if you find that one suit is blocked because a key card is stuck somewhere, you need to attend to that problem before it is too late. This is a two-deck game, and if you see two identical cards close together fairly high up in a column, it is a red flag: You can't win if you don't deal with that situation as soon as possible! Have fun! |

Frank, Penta is one of my favorites; I have played about 1500 games and have 62.5% wins. The most important thing is to make sure that you always - almost - leave one of the tableau piles open. That will enable you to move cards back and forth. This, in turn, will let you keep the waste small = not too many important cards buried.

I am keeping a note of the favourites mentioned and trying them out. Of my own group of Favourites, these are top: Bastion, Demons and Thieves, Penguin, Terrace, The Plot (I actually hate it but am addicted until I win one), Triple freecell, Triple Yukon. Great number of games untried as yet but looking forward to adding more the Favourite list. Question: From my posting how do you I'm not American? |

>Favourite list. >Question: From my posting how do you I'm not American? Americans spell it "favorite". You are using the British spelling. There are lots of words where the British use an extra "u" while we Americans do not. By the way, there's at least one game in Pretty Good Solitaire that deliberately uses the British spelling in its name. |

I'm trying to raise up my penguin score, I'm ranked in the 90's.....some reason this game is harder for me than others....? Frank I do not know if this game is easier for me than you, sometimes I spend hours sometimes days trying everything that I can to win it, I refuse to lose! I hope that it keeps working, I do not know if every game is winnable in it or not. Good luck!

Since I have been playing PGS for about 8 years, I thought I would list some of my favorite games. Some of my favorites have never been mentioned so far. I too love Demons & Thieves and Penguin, but I REALLLLYYYY love Double Yukon. I have played this over 1,000 times and have a 100% win rate. I just keep backing up and retrying as may times as it takes until I finally win. Sometimes it is very difficult (I have played some games almost a month before I won them) but with different strategies I have always managed to win. I have found that on some difficult games, if I turn off "Auto Play" and not let cards move automatically to the foundations. This works quite a lot. A couple of my other favorite games that have not been mentioned are Number Ten and Tarantella. |

I am currently addicted to Hypotenuse. When I started, my winning percentage was below 10%, but I just broke 40%. I've found that you have to go back and explore multiple options when you make your moves, and sometimes have to move cards from the foundations back to the tableau. It's very tricky! |

Hi Ken, I really like the repetition of alternations, I like Chequers alot, both those games are on the opposite sides of the spectrum : ) I've played Alaska the most, but look forward to Ace & King, Agnes Three and games that take some time to play. Diuble Scorpion is good that way. Martha is similiar to Alternations. Quadruple Canfield...so many games : ) I like looking on the boards for games I might not ordinarly play, like Thumb & Pouch (suggested by Lester Timmon jan 19) : ) I seem to gravitate to games I do really well in or really badly, although it is most fun to play a game someplace in the middle. Overall I'm only at 27% for all 550 games. I'm STILL chasing you for alternations Ken!!!

Frank, if it's any consolation, my total winning percentage for the 9000 games I've played is only 14%, so you're killing me in that stat. But having played Waxing Moon 333 times and never winning, playing Interchange 300 times and winning only once, and playing Kingsley 300 times and only winning once sure doesn't help my overall winning percentage!!!!!!!! |

Ken, I've only played 8079 games....so I've a ways to go. Alaska I've played 522 times. So I've got a ways to go : ) I usuually try to play three different games when I sit down to play, hopefully at least once a day. I play a ranked game, a game i'm lousy at and then a game i'm really good at to end on a winning note : ) I have vowed to erase any results from a game that I loose 200 games in without winning, that will help my percentage, but so far the closest i came was 180 losses before learning about a winnable Agnes Sorel game....of course it took me about 100 games before I realized how to recognize unwinnable Agnes Sorel games.....and not play them. Miriam Frankfort (jan20) mentioned adding ALL teh games to favorites, and then deleting then non favorites, that sounds like too much work, plus ALL games has over 500 games....I only add my 100% games over 50 played to favorites...maybe that helps them get played a bit more. I play as et of games and then cycle through each different grouping. I'm playing forty Theives now..... |

Ken, One of the great benefits of this discussion forum is that it makes you aware of games that you may not otherwise try. When you talked about Waxing Moon, I thought it interesting, so I gave it a shot. Actually more than one shot, and my winning percentage is the same as yours... I like the game, though. I don't take the statistics that seriously, but when you have played a game many times, and have a good record, you feel like protecting your record. I have played Penguin about 5800 times, and only lost 56, most of them in the beginning. Now, I usually don't accept a defeat in it. Even with a very tough deal, I keep coming back until I win it. So, the other day, I could really kick myself for clicking on 'new game' instead of 're-play'by mistake! I find satisfaction in playing the games and solving the problems without (except in cases like the one I just mentioned) worrying too much about the stats. Having said that, I think the scoreboards at the GOODSOL web site are exciting; not so much to try to be the world champion, but to see how you participate in a global event. So, thanks for bringing Waxing Moon to my attention. My favorites among the newer games are Cleopatra, Seven by Seven, and Virginia Reel! |

Let me add a thought on Waxing Moon. I have now played it some more times without being close to winning. Yet, I like the game, and I have been thinking about the scenario that would give a win. Obviously, if you have a very lucky start and manage to dispose of the new cards as they come up, you will do well. If you don't, and almost clear the board at a later stage in the game, it is virtually impossible to go back in the waste and win it. In my opinion, that's the weakness of the game. Thomas - are you listening? - a redeal of the waste or some gimmick of going back to the middle of the waste might do the trick??? |

One of my favourite games is Redheads, but I only like to play it in the 98 version as you can manipulate the cards better and leave spaces so it is more winnable than in the latest version (I don't think of it as cheating, just being creative!) |

Thank you, Yoda. I tried Three Up (by the way, my version didn't have rules for that game, but I figured them out)but I still prefer Virginia Reel. In my opinion, there are too many cards in Three Up; it is easier to focus on the problem in Virginia Reel. That game is hard enough for me - I have only 6 wins in 250 games! |

>Why do you say it's a bug? Generally speaking, the games in the Terrace group all have a reserve with a fairly large number of cards, and you are not allowed to play these cards to the tableau, only to the foundations. It's one of the main things that makes the Terrace type of games what they are, it's what makes them different from, say, just another Forty Thieves variant. So not having this rule would go a long way to making a game not a game of this type. |

"The whole Terrace type of games (to which Redheads belongs) is a good one that doesn't get as much notice as it should." I'd like to find this family, I like these games but I can't find them when they're not grouped. That's maybe the reason they don't get the deserved notice. I checked the Redheads, and at the end of the help file I saw the similar games. But I remember playing another one in one of the old versions, only I don't remember it's name. There are probably several games which can't be grouped to a Type. The Solitaire Explorer is quite long anyway, maybe you could add one more line - "Other Type Games"

Sarita, No secret, but a little bit of luck. Remember, I have played over 250 games, and you only 46. I am careful to avoid burying cards in the tableau, if possible. At the same time, I usually give preference to possible plays in the foundations (rather than using the same card, if available, in the tableau) to keep from blocking any of the foundation rows. After all, in the games where you don't see all the cards, you 'play the probabilities' by keeping as many cards 'playable' as possible. |

Frank, this way you lose the chance to enjoy lots of good games. I played for 2-3 years without the help files because of a language problem of the computer, so I guessed and learned while playing. But even when you read the help, you get better after several games. When I have several losses at the beginning and I feel that from now I'll win, I get into the Statistics and clear the bad results. For a nice and easy Spider, try Trapdoor Spider.

I am addicted to Double Scorpion - it's a good long game, with lots of entertainment value before I eventually lose. I'm stuck at 7% after 351 games, but I'm not one of those people who goes back & restarts -- I give up if I feel hopelessly stuck. Can anyone tell me what is the average win rate for people who don't have 100% win rates? (i.e., quitters like me) |

I have 2 wins out of 34 games of Double Scorpion (5.9%). I'm like you when it comes to Solitaire -- I play through games without restarts and undos (I will undo if I click a wrong card or the wrong card autoplays). Thus, I have 59.1% in Penguin. And if you really want to hear something embarrassing, I lost 9 games of Carpet and 12 games of Thumb and Pouch!! Those should be easy. However, I do think the method of exploring every nook and cranny of a shuffle until you find the path to victory is a very interesting concept. In that respect, Solitaire takes on the characteristics of a puzzle instead of a game. I'm content to play through and enjoy the experience. I like Solitaire as a time killer and a way of taking my mind off things. |

I win almost 100% of double scorpion, but I 'cheat'. You can put 'King only' off. There are more games with this option and it is not really fair to compare scores from players who do this and players who don't, so do not despair: you're score is not so bad at all.

It amazes me how deep analysis can go in choosing the first move and any other move after creating a free space during a game. Don't know who invented this game but it was a brilliant idea. |

Repair is my all time favorite, but as someone said you must look the board over very carefully. Forty thives is my second favorite. I also play double Russian and have won about 3 out of 1500. |

Hi Dona: Repair is one of my favorite gamestoo. I also like Antares, Freecell, Towers and Four Colors. Agnes Three is a favorite too. It is an easy game, but sometimes you have to turn off Auto PLay to win. I like games of skill. I usually do not play the games that have a small percentage of winning; I find them to frustrating. Hi Pauline, I don't use auto play if I am trying to keep my average up. Most times it makes me nervous. Dona |

I love the games with lots of cards like Triple Yukon or Quadruple *everything*. But I only play them when I have enough time to spare. I don't like to leave a game in the middle. Except for spider of course. But that is necessity. |

I just started to play triple Yukon, love it, lost at first but now I got the hang of it. Thanks for all the tips on favorite games I really was in a rut, I had my set of games I played every day but I'm branching out now. I got addicted to cleopatra too. |

Triple Yukon is a "break" game for me, too; I've never gotten that addicted to it. I used to be a Double Yukon addict, but lately I play Busy Aces most of the time. |

Miriam and Daizy, if you like Triple Yukon then I'm sure that you would also like Triple Russian, which is very similar but a bit more challenging. eileen |

I played 86 games the last 2 days that I have never played before, started with the easy ones there is still about 500 games in my "never played" menu. Writing down the ones I like to play so I can go back next year and play them again I should be through them all by then lol, then I'll work on "never won" menu. But I do like the ones that give me brain cramps, keeps the old grey matter in shape. Thanks Mr. Warfield for giving me a great way to waste time ;-) Daizy |

>Writing down the ones I like to play so I can go back next year and play them again I should be through them all by then Instead of writing down the games, try selecting 'Game | Add to Favorites' from the menu within the game. The 'Favorites' section will then contain all of those enjoyable games (instead of a list on paper). At this point, my 'Favorites' contain more games than my 'Not Played' section.

>Theres even some I never put there and no way that I know of to get rid of them. From the main (game list) screen, press the 'Options' button on the toolbar (or select 'Options | Options...' from the menu). Select the 'Groups and Wizard' page (from the left panel), then highlight 'Favorites' in center panel. The rightmost panel now contains a list of all of your favorites, and to remove one, just select the game and press the 'Delete' button. I hope this helps.

Thanks Gregg that works, I only play 1-2 games of each, so now I can delete from faves if I deside I don't care for the game after all :-) Ella |

Did you know you can create your own groups? I lost my favorites a few times after upgrading, but this doen't happen if you have your own group. I have one called Miriam. I initially put all the games in it. Now I delete every game I don't like. |

I hate to mention it, since right now I'm in the #1 spot, but Fan Albert is one of my favorites, because I can win all of them, but it's not a gimme win, there's some skill involved. I don't usually like the ones with mostly luck, I think I must have control issues.<g> Thanks for all the suggestions, I need to go play some of these new (to me) ones now. Oh and try Mystique, it's new this version and I really like it. I'm not so good at it, but I really like it.

Gosh, I forgot about this place! It's been six years since I've written here. I'm still addicted to Demons and Thieves, well it's my fav anyway and I would REALLY love to win Triple Russian more often! ha I didn't realize the web thingy where you could compete with others (most games won etc.) so cleared my D&T's so I could try and keep a perfect score. Good grief..did that guy REALLY PLAY 40,000 GAMES?

Tom, With Redheads being such a difficult game to win, I don't understand the high scores that a few people have gotten. Is it luck, or am I missing something? |

Yes you are missing something Kathy,it's no secret. A few people have found ways to post phoney stats. As I said to you recently, just ignore the stats and enjoy winning your own honest percentage. If you want to compete on a level playing field and post your stats, may I suggest the Goodsol 101 collection. Cheating is not possible there, and everyone plays exactly the same game numbers in numerical order.. |
